Weekly Jetsam 2.25.23
Sharing: my favorite magazine, Cole Arthur Riley, a heart-melting video, and more Lisa Olivera.
HEY!
This is my last Weekly Jetsam of February & just for fun I’m hitting send just after 10:00 on a SATURDAY NIGHT #rebel. This newsletter is a little rambly, but full of fun things. I hope you enjoy it and your Sunday!
I’m a library fan girl. One of the awesome things my library gives me access to (besides a dehydrator), is quite possibly every magazine in the world.
Even though I’ve never been to the UK (how many years will I have to write a Substack newsletter to afford that trip), most of the “leisure” content I consume somehow turns out to be British. If you ever want a list of British TV to watch hit me up (just finished Happy Valley, season 2, 10/10 recommend).
ANYWAYS, back to the magazine. I love The Simple Things magazine SO much and their March issue just came out.
In a perfect world I would thumb through the physical copy while drinking my tea, but the magazine would cost $6.99 and then I’d have to pay $7.15 to ship it over the pond, so alas the free digital version from the library will have to suffice.
Here’s 3 reasons their magazine rules:
It’s absolutely gorgeous.
They don’t try to sell me perfume.
This how they describe themselves #lifegoals:
This week’s interview with Cole Arthur Riley on the Good Life Project podcast made me stop what I was doing and soak in every word.
Listen to the interview if you want, but at a minimum go follow Cole Arthur Riley on Instagram (@blackliturgies) immediately and buy her book.
I must’ve stopped and replayed snippet where Jonathan Fields reads the quote from her book, This Here Flesh , at least 5 times:
“Our liberation begins with the irrevocable belief that we are worthy to be liberated. That we are worthy of a life that does not degrade us, but honors our whole selves. When you believe in your dignity, or at least someone else does, it becomes more difficult to remain content with the bondage with which you’ve become so acquainted. You begin to wonder what you are meant for”.
Okay, I don’t want to admit this but, occasionally life altering content comes in the form of a TikTok video. This boy singing Coldplay to his westie immediately elicits the warm and fuzzies. If you stop watching before you get to the nose kisses you’re Satan.
I’m not actually stalking
even though I think I've mentioned her in every newsletter for the last month. I just think she has my brain wiretapped. This quote might turn into a magnet for my fridge, and I don't even like fridge magnets really. Are you enjoying what you are reading? Have ideas for what you’d like to see more or less of? Want to chat? Reach out.
My journal, Lessons from Nature is now out. You can find it here.
Thanks for sharing the Lisa Olivera quote! It struck a cord and just introduced me to a new voice. Love that!
