2024: Cast Iron Skillet

I want to be cookware this new year.

The cast iron skillet landed on my counter with a thunk.

I’d just finished scraping out what remained of the frizzled chickpeas I cooked for a New Years dinner “party” of two, when it dawned on me–I want to live my life like cast iron cookware. 

No, I don’t want to be the heaviest in the cabinet, (my first breakfast of 2024 consisted of cake and caramel pretzel ice cream so I’m not fat shaming here–diet culture be damned), but I want to live a well-seasoned life. I want to move through the world aware that each experience is a chance to acquire wisdom that only gets better over time.

I want to be simple, straight forward, but full of potential and versatile—able to handle the scrambled egg moments of life like a champion, but hardy enough to accommodate a perfectly seared sirloin. 

I want to be forgiving of myself and others and know that in the event I lose some of my seasoning and resilience, the solution is straightforward—time, oil and heat. 

And, In the the same way a cast iron ensures the test of time, often handed down from generation-to-generation, I seek to leave a legacy. I want the way I made people feel to endure the test of time.
