Weekly Jetsam 4.9.23
topics: spring obviously, discovering newsletters, and my newest self care obsession.
Happy Cadbury Egg Day to those that celebrate.
I snuck downstairs to write this while my dog children are still asleep. With sunrises getting earlier, their internal alarm clocks have them stretching and yawning to get up and start their days sooner. Thankfully, because we are both animals, my internal alarm clock is doing the same thing.
Here’s what I’ve been up to before I give you my shares. I’ve been slowing down & getting outside. In New England it’s the time of year that if you blink, you’ll easily miss the fact that each day the grass gets a little greener and the sun climbs a little higher in the sky. I really made an effort to observe the daily changes this week and it’s impossible to not absorb that growth energy.
The start of my week I was in a bit of a “holding pattern”. The words weren’t flowing. Ideas weren’t bubbling to the surface. I was just a little languish-y. In the past, on day two of this feeling, I probably would’ve started to get nervous I was taking a nose dive AND ALL WOULD BE UNDONE—I’D BE IN A PIT OF DESPAIR FOREVER, but more enlightened me knows that a) I’ve never actually been completely undone and b) I’ve never been in a pit of despair. So, I just noticed my blah-ness and said ‘sup to it. Low and behold, I felt back to baseline on Wednesday. I’ve really stopped trying to force things these days, and it’s been a game changer.
The end of my week brought a great summer job offer, doing yardwork (which I enjoy), and a really exciting and promising business brainstorm session with a friend. Today, I plan on spreading some more mulch and then heading to over to a friend’s for an early Easter dinner.
Substack is such a great place because your words become a magnet.
They attract people who share common threads. I discovered
when Lindsey left some comments on a few of my newsletters. I really enjoyed her post, Finding our Place, and the way she weaved in her knowledge of Tarot with this time of year. From Finding our Place:
The threes bring creative, active energy. It’s not enough to have an idea, we have to do something! So that our ideas, dreams, visions can grow in the warmth of the sun. The figure in this card has sent out ships, and she patiently awaits their safe return. Susan Chang calls this a card of “fruitful awaiting.” I love that language: have faith in the efforts that you are making. What am I looking forward to? How can I have hopeful expectation of the world I am trying to create? What adventure awaits?
I also ordered a new book (and a copy for a friend) based on her newsletter and I’m enjoying thumbing through, The Open-Air Life. Cheers to more fruiluftsliv!
Okay-if I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m telling you now. I am not trendy and I’m okay with it.
When I was teaching my middle schoolers kept me in the loop. Now that my interactions with the youthful members of society are a bit more limited, my knowledge of all things hip is getting more dismal. So, chances are you already know about this MAGICAL item I discovered shopping with a friend last week. If you don’t…your welcome. Get ready for it…SHOWER STEAMERS. How did I miss these? I’m officially obsessed. Try it immediately.
Just swap out Herbal Essences for my shower steamers and this was basically me all week.
Feeling like a bloodhound more often than not these days and loving it.
Are you enjoying what you are reading? Have ideas for what you’d like to see more or less of? Want to chat? Reach out.
My journal, Lessons from Nature is now out. You can find it here.
Thanks for the mention 🥰 so glad it resonated and that you’re loving the book! I’m hoping to go on a hunt for a troll forest this week while my kids are on break. Also, I hate baths so I’ll be trying those steamers soon!!
